Throwback: Being Sassy with SaaS Before It Was Cool

Eeman revisits an old article he wrote about how SaaS should be a default business model for software.

While reviewing our annual operating plan and observing the market. I just realized how normal SaaS (Software as a Service) has become and how the business models for software provisions aren’t based on licenses anymore but more on committed service. From Apple to Microsoft to Adobe, almost everyone followed Google to the subscription path. I think it’s good for both the suppliers and the consumers as it makes sure that the software we use is constantly updated while on the developer side, it makes sure that business is always on. Since it lessens piracy.

Made me remember this old blog post I wrote on LinkedIn way back in 2014

Most people think that the software battlefield is a competition of features. Most companies sue each other for billions just to make sure they’re the only one delivering the unique functionality their platform has.

People remain and continue using platforms because of reliability and accessibility, it’s all about service.

Facebook’s first few features aren’t unique, we all saw that with Friendster and Myspace, what differentiated the social media giant was the reliability of it’s infrastructure. There were no downtimes and there were no limits to what we can upload.

And now, even if you can create an app with ALL the features of FB, unless you have the same amount of man power at your disposal, you wouldn’t stand a chance.

If we’d treat software as if it was a service we offer, we can finally rethink about all the time and money we spend figuring out how to patent a feature we know someone somewhere someday will just think of a way to do it better.

Instead of worrying about protecting our “Identity”, maybe we should all just focus on providing our customers with experiences that enhances their lives.

“Cloud and SaaS allow anything digital to be more accessible, connected, and reliable.”

I think at this point the theory still stands or proven. SaaS is really the best way if not the only way to go for software as it enables accessibility, connectivity, and reliability for the many different things we use these tools for.

Even way back in 2014 when the term cloud isn’t even counted as a normal requirement. (Which I have another throwback post too. Wew. I seem to keep blabbering about these things a lot when I was younger. 😅)
